LUNCH WITH BOOKS: Captives in Gray - The Civil War Prisons of the Union
August 22, 2017
12:00pm - 12:00pm
Perhaps no topic is more heated, and the sources more tendentious, than that of Civil War prisons and the treatment of prisoners of war. In a vivid description of conditions and events rarely described—the imprisonment of captured Confederate soldiers during the Civil War—Roger Pickenpaugh will investigate variations between Union camps and overall prison policy to determine as nearly as possible what actually happened in the admittedly overcrowded, undersupplied, and poorly-administered camps at noon, Tuesday, August 22 at the Ohio County Public Library.
Roger Pickenpaugh is a retired teacher who taught for thirty years at Shenandoah Middle School in Sarahsville, Ohio. He is the author of over a dozen books on outstanding weather events in Ohio and the Civil War. His book Captives in Gray: The Civil War Prisons of the Union was published by the University of Alabama Press and awarded the 2010 James I. Robertson Jr. Literary Prize by the Central New Jersey Civil War Round Table. A companion volume, Captives in Blue, rounds out Pickenpaugh's examination of Civil War prisoner of war facilities with a study of Union prisoners in Confederate prisons. Pickenpaugh lives in Noble County Ohio with his wife and co-researcher, Marion. Copies of Captives in Gray and Captives in Blue along with several of Pickenpaugh’s books will be available to purchase following his talk.
In the event that Mr. Pickenpaugh will not be able to attend Lunch With Books on Tuesday on August 22, author Gary Williams will talk about his book Spies, Scoundrels, and Rogues of the Ohio Frontier.
Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch and complimentary beverages are provided. Call the library at 304-232-0244.
