LUNCH WITH BOOKS: “Minced Gaelic” - Original Celtic Fiddle Tunes

TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2018 AT NOON

“Minced Gaelic” - Original Celtic Fiddle Tunes

Though St. Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday this year, the celebration continues the following Tuesday at Lunch With Books. Author and musician Charles May will be joined by friends who will perform songs from May's new book, "Minced Gaelic – 101 Original Fiddle Tunes." Every tune tells a story, and the trio (May on fiddle, Gerard Rohlf on guitar, and Mary Amrhein-May on cello) will perform selections from the book and share the stories behind them, March 20, 2018, at noon.

Lunch With Books: March 20, 2018, at noon - Original Celtic Fiddle Tunes with Charles May

Charles May has performed professionally as a violinist and fiddler for over 27 years, in addition to maintaining a career as a technologist in the financial service industry. He has performed for countless wedding receptions and corporate parties either as a chamber musician or strolling violinist, and as many orchestral performances as a union musician. Nurturing other stylistic interests, he performed for seven years in dance/festival band The Swing Shifters, then founded the Vintage Jazz Duo, absorbing the styles of jazz violin greats like Stephane Grappelli and Joe Venuti. His current fascination with Irish, Scottish, and especially Cape Breton styles continues with Irish band Na Gaels, long considered the "House Band" for the Irish Center of Pittsburgh, and well known for their Irish festival performances over the last decade. He toured the country performing for Irish dance competitions (Feisanna) and for university-sponsored events. His wife, Mary, is a professional cellist and they often perform together in their chamber group CAMA Strings, and in church ensemble with folk influences, Caritas, having produced three CDs together whose proceeds go entirely to charitable causes.
