In partnership with the WALS Foundation, the Ohio County Public Library will offer a free screening of the PBS American Experience documentary, The Mine Wars, as part of the Reuther-Pollack Labor History Symposium. The Mine Wars tells the overlooked story of the miners in the mountains of southern West Virginia who came together in a protracted struggle for their rights. Decades of violence, strikes, assassinations, and marches accompanied their attempts to form a union, culminating in the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War.
The two-hour film will be shown in the library auditorium starting at 6:30 pm, Thursday, August 31.
The Reuther-Pollack Labor History Symposium will be held at the First State Capitol Building, Saturday, September 2, 2017. Dr. Charles Keeney, one of the experts who appears in the film, will be a symposium speaker. For more information about the symposium, visit www.walswheeling.com, The WALS Foundation Facebook page, or call 304-232-8100.
