LUNCH WITH BOOKS - Tuesday, March 31, 2020 - Canceled
"Wheeling Film Society Conversation - Sunset Boulevard"

Mar. 29 – Ohio County Public Library at 2:00 - Canceled
Screening: Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950) - 110 mins.

Mar. 31 - Library at Noon - Canceled
Conversation: Sunset Boulevard

More than any other movie of Hollywood’s “Golden Era,” Sunset Boulevard presents the dangerous illusions beneath the mythic glamour of the Hollywood dream factory. Nominated for 11 Oscars, Billy Wilder’s greatest film is Hollywood’s haunted house, and it’s creepier than any Universal monster movie. William Holden plays a feckless screenwriter trying to hang around the glitz after his dreams have died, becoming the boy-toy of Norma Desmond, faded star of the defunct silent-era of motion pictures. That the role of Norma was so memorably embodied by Gloria Swanson, the iconic, faded silent-movie star, give the film its genuine chills. Are you “ready” for Norma’s “close-up”?

All Wheeling Film Society programs – screenings and conversations – are free of admission charge.

John Whitehead, retired professor of film studies and author of Appraising The Graduate: The Mike Nichols Classic and Its Impact in Hollywood (2011) and Mike Nichols and the Cinema of Transformation (2014), will serve as host for the screenings and conversations.

Attend as many or as few programs as your schedule allows.
All are welcome, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Parental Guidance is recommended for all screenings and conversations.

Screening Sunday, March 29, 2020 in the Ohio County Public Library Auditorium. Further program details to be announced.

Lunch With Books starts at noon in the Library Auditorium.

"Lunch With Books" is the library’s flagship program for adult patrons. These lunchtime programs feature authors, poets, musicians, historians, and more every Tuesday at noon. Complimentary beverages are provided. Bring your lunch, feed your brain!
