The Library is currently closed due to concerns over the potential spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in our area. All Library programs are cancelled until further notice.
In the meantime, we are currently offering LIVESTREAM LUNCH WITH BOOKS on our Facebook page.
Additionally, OCPL will release a new "Lunch With Books from the Vault" every Tuesday at noon on Lunch With Books Facebook page. Make sure to follow Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library for additional video programs and news updates.
Doug Estepp will be discussing the Battle of Matewan, which occurred 100 years ago this May 19th. That battle was a seminal event in American labor history and the gunfight there would lead directly to the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest armed uprising in US history excepting only the American Civil War. Mr. Estepp will discuss how the fractured nature of Mingo County politics and hubris by the coal companies operating there created a climate that would lead to the unfortunate events in Matewan and beyond.
Doug Estepp grew up in Mingo County, WV in a family of coal miners. He graduated with a History degree from West Virginia University in 1983 and has been an ardent student of the West Virginia mine wars for 40 years. He is a long-time employee of the US Department of the Treasury in Martinsburg and resides with his wife Carol in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He has owned and operated Coal Country Tours since 2010 and has recently appeared in two documentaries, the Emmy nominated Blood on the Mountain by Mari-Lynn Evans, and The Mine Wars by American Experience.
"Lunch With Books" is the library’s flagship program for adult patrons. These lunchtime programs feature authors, poets, musicians, historians, and more every Tuesday at noon. Complimentary beverages are provided. Bring your lunch, feed your brain!
