During the country’s “Gilded Age,” many of the very wealthy built summer homes along the Hudson River in upstate New York or “cottages” in Newport, Rhode Island. A few had houses in both places. Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein visited both areas and will share some of the interesting stories that surround these homes and their owners, including Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the code that bears his name, and his magnificent 1851 Italianate villa in Poughkeepsie, NY, ‘Locust Grove.’ Come to Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, Tuesday, December 12 at noon and find out “how the other half lived.”
Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein are local historians who enjoy discovering and sharing interesting pieces of the past, particularly Wheeling history. They are the authors of a book on local history, “Walking Pleasant Valley,” and are long-time, active members of the historic preservation organization, Friends of Wheeling.
