Born in Wheeling, African American conductor Everett Lee broke down many barriers in the classical music world — first African American to conduct a major Broadway production, first African American to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the south, first African American to conduct a major opera company in the United States, conductor & Musical Director of Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, and guest conductor at symphony orchestras around the world to name a just a few achievements. And it all started here in Wheeling when a young Everett Lee began taking lessons on Wheeling Island. Lee, who now lives in Sweden, will turn 101 years old on August 31! Help us celebrate the birthday of this international star who still proudly calls Wheeling his hometown.
