PEOPLE'S UNIVERSITY: The First World War, Class 8

Class 8: Wheeling Remembers the War


To conclude the study of WWI, we will examine how the war shaped Wheeling for years to come.  Obviously the most affected were the families who lost sons abroad.  We will also highlight the memorialization of the war in Wheeling and the surrounding region. This will include such organizations as the American Legion Post 1, immigrant veterans groups, and the famous Doughboy Statue.




Instructor: Dr. Hal Gorby

Dr. Gorby is Teaching Assistant Professor and Director Undergraduate Advising at West Virginia University where he teaches West Virginia and Appalachian History and Immigration/ Ethnic History U.S. Working Class 20th Century U.S. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from West Virginia University.






In keeping with the mission of public libraries as sanctuaries of free learning for all people, the Ohio County Public Library created The People’s University, a free program for adults who wish to continue their education in the liberal arts. The People’s University features courses—taught by experts in each subject—that enable patrons to pursue their goal of lifelong learning in classic subjects such as history, philosophy, and literature.

Ohio County Public Library

The Ohio County Public Library serves all persons who live in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, which includes Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler counties. Residents in Jefferson, Belmont and Monroe counties of Ohio and Washington, Greene and Allegheny counties of Pennsylvania may also receive library services. 

Monday - Thursday: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Friday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Sunday: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
