UPPER OHIO VALLEY FESTIVAL OF BOOKS: The Sister Roberta Elam Mystery

PRESENTED BY THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY FESTIVAL OF BOOKS

The Sister Roberta Elam Mystery

On 13 June, 1977, Roberta Elam, a 26-year-old Postulant Nun, was raped and murdered on the grounds of Mount Saint Joseph’s Convent in the middle of the day. Despite a massive police investigation spanning four decades, the case remains unsolved.

Three people who were there during the investigation will provide an update on Wheeling's most notorious and persistent mystery.

Fred Connors is a retired investigative reporter for the Wheeling newspapers. He is founder and coordinator of the Ohio Valley Cold Case Task Force, a group formed to investigate unsolved murders, questionable deaths, and missing person cases on both sides of the Ohio River.

Harry Croft is a retired detective with the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department. He is a charter member of the Ohio Valley Cold Case Task Force and had an active role in the 1977 broad daylight murder of Sister Roberta Elam on grounds of the Mount St. Joseph convent in Wheeling.

Linda Comins is a reporter for the Wheeling Intelligencer and News-Register who reported on the Elam case extensively as it unfolded.
