1888 Flash Floods

1888 Flash Floods

The summer of 1888 saw two major destructive flash floods: July 19 and August 21. The first resulted in loss of life and widespread destruction, including the B&O trestle over Wheeling Creek. The second destroyed the Main Street Bridge and undid many of the repairs of damage from the first. The August flood was the result of a hurricane that came ashore near New Orleans and followed the Ohio River to Pennsylvania.
