LUNCH WITH BOOKS: Life at the West Virginia Penitentiary - The Story of Maggie Gray

The West Virginia Penitentiary was a harsh environment. It took a special person to work there. Maggie Gray was one such person. At the age of 42, Gray became a Correctional Officer in one of the country's most violent prisons. In the eight-year period she was employed at the penitentiary, Gray estimated that between 15 to 20 inmates were murdered and countless more additional murder attempts were made. Author Charles “C.J.” Plogger, accompanied by Maggie Gray, will talk about Gray’s time working at the penitentiary from 1987 until its closure in 1995 at noon, Tuesday, August 15 at the Ohio County Public Library. Copies of Plogger’s book, Life at the West Virginia Penitentiary: The Story of Maggie Gray, will be available to purchase after his talk.

Plogger is a pastor at the Ash Avenue Church of God in Moundsville, West Virginia. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado where he majored in History and he minored in Criminal Justice. He has a Master of Divinity degree from the Anderson School of Theology and a Doctorate of Ministry from the Bethel Theological Seminary. On his days off, he leads guided tours at the West Virginia Penitentiary. In addition to Life at the West Virginia Penitentiary: The Story of Maggie Gray, Plogger has also written the book One Step Closer, a six-month discipleship study.
