2020 US Census

The 2020 US Census is taking place right now and it plays an important role in shaping the community. The 2020 Census will influence funding for community services for the next 10 years. Data from the census helps determine where more than $675 billion is spent each year in states and communities. It also determines the number of representatives West Virginia gets in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Ohio County Public Library is partnering with the US Census Bureau in providing information about the census and providing free access to the internet for public use to respond to the census online. This is the first time the Census can be answered online and by phone. THOSE WHO DO NOT SELF-RESPOND WILL BE VISITED BY CENSUS TAKERS IN PERSON. Because of COVID-19 the response timeframe has been extended to September 30th. Census takers will begin making in-person visits to households in West Virginia that have not self-responded starting July 16th. 

Starting on March 12, the Census Bureau will mail each household information on how to respond online or by phone. Some households have received the short form in the mail, but most receive a letter with a 12-digit code to start the Census questionnaire online.  You do not need this code to complete the Census.  You can simply enter your physical address.  Forms are not available to be picked up at any location.

A short while later, paper forms will be sent to households that have not responded. Census workers will follow-up as well. All answers are confidential and cannot be shared with any law enforcement or landlords.

NOTE: Census workers will be visited households in West Virginia that have not self-responded starting July 16th, 2020. Self-response is the best way to avoid someone showing up at your door. Visit 2020census.gov, call 844-330-2020, or mail back your paper form to self-respond today!

Our Response Rate So Far

WV and Ohio County Census 2020 Response RateAs of August 5th, West Virginia has reported a 54.6% response rate to the 2020 US Census. That means, with a population of over 1.7 million people, over 813,000 West Virginians have not been counted during the initial self-respond period. Only New Mexico and Alaska have worse response rates.

Ohio County's response rate as of August 5th is 62.2%. With a population of approximately 41,000, that means there are still over 15,000 uncounted residents. Why is it so important to get everyone counted? Census data helps inform planning efforts for Wheeling and the greater Ohio Valley region and determines how much funding our local schools, roads, libraries, and more receive in the coming decade. Our response rate shapes West Virginia's and Ohio County's future for the next ten years!

Your response helps with funding decisions for health care, emergency services, schools, roads, and more because census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year.  Results also determine how many seats in Congress each state gets.

Your privacy matters.

When you respond to the census, your answers are kept anonymous and they are used only to produce statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential. The Census Bureau cannot release any identifiable information about you, your home, or your business, even to law enforcement agencies.
