New Storytimes Start in September

Our Children’s Department just keeps getting better and better. With Storytimes happening every day, we wondered how we could offer more stories to fit your needs. We’re keeping many of your favorite storytimes, don’t worry. We are adding another evening storytime on Wednesdays to provide more opportunities that suit patron availability. We are also changing our Friday storytime from Preschool Storytime to a more inclusive Sensory Storytime.

Mr. B is getting his own weekly Storytime! Every Wednesday evening, from 6-6:30pm, Mr. B will bring the same energy and fun he brought to Storytime in the Park to the library. “I’m excited to have a place where, after I do outreach for the week, kids can see me on a regular basis,” he said. He hopes kids come home from school happy that they had a Storytime with Mr. B in their classrooms and that they’ll want to see him on Wednesday evenings for even more fun stories!

We’re adding a new storytime to our Friday programming. Sensory Storytime will begin September 5th, from 10:30 to 11:00am. This Storytime will focus on offering accommodations that will make the experience more enjoyable for neurodiverse children. “What we consider a typical setting is not necessarily the setting that will allow all kids to flourish,” Children’s Department head Miss Carie explained.

Accommodations will include:

  • Lower volume levels and softer lighting to reduce sensory overload and help children stay calm and engaged.
  • Visual schedules and clear outlines to ensure that children always know what to expect next, helping ease transitions and build confidence.
  • Hands-on manipulatives and sensory tools, such as scarves, shakers, or fidgets, can help give children an outlet for movement and a concrete way to connect with the story.
  • Flexible seating and movement breaks, so kids can sit, stand, rock, or wiggle as needed without pressure to “sit still.”
  • Smaller group sizes create a more comfortable, less stimulating environment where children can thrive.

We hope to see you at one of our new storytimes soon!
