Irish singer-songwriter and poet Steafán Hanvey is the son of world-renowned Northern Irish photographer, Bobbie Hanvey, who captured The Troubles on film and created iconic portraits of figures like Seamus Heaney, Gerry Adams, and Brian Friel. In Reconstructions, these photographs are set in context by Steafán, whose memories of a childhood less ordinary are presented in a lyric poetry filled with startling imagery and insights that capture the wit, cadences, anguish, and dreams of the people of Northern Ireland. Reconstructions acts as a timely reminder of just how futile and unnecessary internecine conflict really is. But most of all, the book is a testament to the strength and resilience of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. Steafán, who hails from Downpatrick in Northern Ireland, performed Look Behind You! – a multi-media project that showcases his father’s prize-winning photojournalism at Lunch With Books in 2013.
