July 05, 2022
12:00pm - 1:00pm

TODAY AT NOON: Lunch with Books: Wheeling Turnvereins with Dr. Hal Gorby

Dr. Hal Gorby will discuss his research on the history of the German Turnverein Society in Wheeling. The city was home to numerous German choral singing societies, including the Arion, Harmonie, Maennerchor, Beethoven, Germania, Liedertafel, Mozart, Concordia, Liederkranz, and Teutonia. The Turner (or Turnverein) Society emphasized gymnastics, helped organize the city’s early German Day festivals, and operated Turner’s Hall, which was located near the Marsh building in North Wheeling. Note: NEW program replacing the Cornet Band program, which will be rescheduled for fall. (Image: 1906 German Day fesivtal sign held by Pollack Cigar employees)
