LUNCH WITH BOOKS: Augustus Pollack - The George Washington of Labor's Cause

This program is part of Reuther-Pollack Labor Heritage Week and will be presented by Dr. Hal Gorby & Seán Duffy. A man of empathy, Pollack may be the only business owner to have a monument erected in his memory by organized labor.

In addition to being in-person in the Library auditorium, this program will be available to watch live onFacebook Live, on YouTube, and on the OCPL website's LWB Livestream page Log into your Facebook or YouTube account during the program to leave questions for our presenters in the comments box. They will answer them during the live broadcast.

PRESENTER BIO: William Hal Gorby is a Teaching Associate Professor of History, and Director of Undergraduate Studies at West Virginia University. He teaches courses on West Virginia, Appalachian, and American Immigration History, and is the 2020-21 recipient of the Eberly College’s Outstanding Teacher award. His book, Wheeling’s Polonia: Reconstructing Polish Community in a West Virginia Steel Town was published by WVU Press in May 2020. He has also consulted on the research and script editing for the PBS American Experience documentary “The Mine Wars.” In 2019, he researched, wrote, and hosted a podcast by Wheeling Heritage Media, titled “Henry: The Life and Times of Wheeling’s Most Notorious Brewer,” which won a History Hero Award from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History in 2020.

PRESENTER BIO: Seán Duffy is the programming coordinator at the Ohio County Public Library (OCPL) and the Executive Director of the Wheeling Academy of Law and Science (WALS) Foundation at the First State Capitol in Wheeling, where he manages the Reuther-Wheeling Library and Labor History Archive and organizes the annual Reuther-Pollack Labor Heritage Week and History Symposium. Prior to these current positions, Seán served as the Intellectual Property Coordinator at the Center for Educational Technologies (CET) at Wheeling Jesuit University, where he worked on the Foundations of Freedom Constitutional history project. Seán earned a BA in History and an MBA from Wheeling Jesuit University, and a JD from the American University. He is the author or editor of four books on local history. In 2013, he had the honor of presenting Augustus Pollack for induction into the Wheeling Hall of Fame in the Business & Industry category.
