Recently, the Ohio County Public Library Archives received a donation of a stylish cornet and some photos of the Excelsior Cornet Band from Martins Ferry, OH, circa late 19th/ early 20th centuries. Additional research revealed that the Wheeling area once boasted dozens and dozens of brass bands (generically referred to as "Cornet Bands") performing in parades and at a variety of events regionally. In fact, it seems as though every small town or neighborhood up and down the Ohio River had at least one such band. Now, to celebrate this lesser known musical history, OCPL is partnering with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra's WSO on the Go. The WSO brass Quintet, featuring Chris Wilson — Trumpet; Drew Fennell — Trumpet; Jason Allison — Horn; Sebastian Vera — Trombone; and Sam Buccigrossi — Tuba. Amid performances of period music by the quintet, history segments and images about the Ohio Valley's Cornet Bands will be presented along with commentary on the instruments from the experts. We will combine history and music for a memorable afternoon.
In addition to being in-person in the Library auditorium, this program will be available to watch live on Facebook Live, on YouTube, and on the OCPL website's LWB Livestream page. Log into your Facebook or YouTube account during the program to leave questions for our presenters in the comments box. They will answer them during the live broadcast.
