Large Selection of New Large Print Available

This week we're highlighting one of our most popular and fastest-growing collections: Large Type. Now wait, before you say "My eyesight is perfect, I don't read large print," check out these benefits of larger print books. Yes, the magnified font size in large type books makes reading easier for those who have difficulties with regular print. But, it’s also proven that the bigger font improves letter and word recognition, aids reading comprehension, and increases feelings of satisfaction when reading.

Try a large type book while exercising!

Large type books are also great for people who like to read while exercising. Work out on a treadmill or stationary bike? Have you ever tried to read a 10pt font size from 3 feet away while exercising? It’s not easy. Grab a large print book an see the difference for yourself.

"But I read on my tablet while I'm exercising." Ah! Well, there's another benefit of large print. According to the latest Nielsen stats, the average American adult spends 11 hours per day with electronic media. Eleven hours! Digital eye strain can occur after as little as two hours of digital device use. Grab an easy-reading large type book and try giving your tech-strained eyes a well-deserved rest.

Take a look at some of the newest arrivals to our Large Type collection below - we have some new Romance, some Westerns, Mysteries, and more. Or, browse our online catalog - we have over 8,000 Large Type titles in our collections! If you see something you'd like to reserve for curbside pick-up, call us at 304-232-0244 during our adjusted hours (10 am to 3 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and 10 am to 7 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays), or log into your account on our online catalog and reserve materials over the internet. Once the Library staff has completed an online or telephone reserve request, a staff member will call you to schedule an appointment for curbside pickup.

To review all the new arrivals at the library (not just the Large Type), check out our gallery of new books for JulyAugust, and September

In the Country of Women: A Memoir by Susan Straight:
In the Country of Women is a valuable social history and a personal narrative that reads like a love song to America and indomitable women. In inland Southern California, near the desert and the Mexican border, Susan Straight, a self-proclaimed book nerd, and Dwayne Sims, an African American basketball player, started dating in high school. After college, they married and drove to Amherst, Massachusetts, where Straight met her teacher and mentor, James Baldwin, who encouraged her to write. Once back in Riverside, at driveway barbecues and fish fries with the large, close-knit Sims family, Straight—and eventually her three daughters—heard for decades the stories of Dwayne's female ancestors. Some women escaped violence in post-slavery Tennessee, some escaped murder in Jim Crow Mississippi, and some fled abusive men. Susan's family, too, reflects the hardship and resilience of women pushing onward—from Switzerland, Canada, and the Colorado Rockies to California. A Pakistani word, biraderi, is one Straight uses to define a complex system of kinship and clan—those who become your family. An entire community helped raise her daughters.

Lake of the Ozarks by Bill Geist:
Before there was "tourism" and souvenir ashtrays became "kitsch," the Lake of the Ozarks was a Shangri-La for middle-class Midwestern families on vacation, complete with man-made beaches, Hillbilly Mini Golf, and feathered rubber tomahawks. It was there that author Bill Geist spent summers in the Sixties during his school and college years working at Arrowhead Lodge — a small resort owned by his bombastic uncle — in all areas of the operation, from cesspool attendant to bellhop. Geist takes readers back to a bygone era and reflects on his coming of age in the American Heartland.
