The Library will be closed for the New Year's holiday this year from Thursday, December 31st through Sunday, January 3rd.

Tis the season for New Year's resolutions!

Do you have any big plans in mind for 2021? Want to start gardening? Or painting? Building something magnificent? How about journaling or writing that memoir or family history or finally tackling that great book we all have inside of us? How about cooking healthier meals? Or maybe cooking more decadent meals? Then there's always starting a healthy (yet attainable) exercise regimen (to accommodate those more decadent meals). Or maybe, just maybe, it's as simple as wanting to read more books in 2021. We can definitely help you with that. No matter what your resolutions, we're willing to bet we probably have a book or two to kickstart your New Year. Call the Library at 304-232-0244 and ask for the reference desk to get started. Our reference assistants can hook you up with some great titles. Or search our catalog yourself at and reserve some books online. Then make sure to schedule a time to pick up your reserves, either in-person by appointment or by curbside services before December 31.

Or relax, enjoy the holiday, and wait until we resume services on Monday, January 4th. Either way, have a happy, happy new year!

Some Literary Quotes for the New Year

Smiles from the threshold of the year to come,
Whispering 'it will be happier'...”
Alfred, Lord Tennyson

“Not knowing when the dawn will come
I open every door.”
– Emily Dickinson, Not Knowing When the Dawn Will Come

“There was a smell of Time in the air tonight. He smiled and turned the fancy in his mind. There was a thought. What did time smell like? Like dust and clocks and people. And if you wondered what Time sounded like it sounded like water running in a dark cave and voices crying and dirt dropping down upon hollow box lids, and rain. And, going further, what did Time look like? Time looked like snow dropping silently into a black room or it looked like a silent film in an ancient theater, 100 billion faces falling like those New Year balloons, down and down into nothing. That was how Time smelled and looked and sounded. And tonight–Tomas shoved a hand into the wind outside the truck–tonight you could almost taste time.”
– Ray Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles

“Lift up your faces, you have a piercing need
For this bright morning dawning for you
… The horizon leans forward
Offering you space to place new steps of change.”
– Maya Angelou, On the Pulse of Morning

“I hope that in the year to come, you make mistakes. Glorious, amazing mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.”
– Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman's Journal

“The drums are slamming, rhythmic, exciting. As the minutes pass, it feels to me like we are collectively pulling the year . . . toward us. Like we have roped it with our music, and now we are hauling it across the night sky like it's a massive fishing net, brimming with all our unknown destinies. And what a heavy net it is, indeed, carrying as it does all the births, deaths, tragedies, wars, love stories, inventions, transformations and calamities that are destined for all of us this coming year.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

“For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.”
