Robert R. Bosold World War II Collection, 1940-1945


About this collection:

➤ Robert R. Bosold was born in Wheeling, WV on March 18, 1922 to Maurice and Margaret Lough Bosold. He grew up on Wheeling Island, attended Wheeling Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Central Catholic High School. In 1940, he enlisted in the United States Army and reported to Fort Bragg, North Carolina as part of the 9th Division of the 39th Infantry. On November 8, 1942 Bosold’s regiment landed in Algiers, Algeria in North Africa. He received a hand injury during combat, earning him his first of two Purple Hearts. The 9th landed on D-Day and they participated in the battles at Kasserine, Faide, Inuknassay and Djebelcheniti, Tunisia. Bosold earned a second Purple Heart for his leg injuries sustained during these battles. Bosold also earned the Bronze star for Meritorious Achievement and the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. After the war, Bosold went on to work for Wheeling Steel and retired from the Yorkville Plant in 1982. He and his wife, Ann M. Sisamis Caiazza, operated the Carriage House Restaurant and Bar in Shadyside, OH until 1982. Bosold died on July 24, 2012 in Shadyside, OH. The collection consists of photographs of Bosold related to his military service in World War II.
