Frederick Elkes WWII Prisoner of War Collection, 1935-1959

 ▼ About this collection:
The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, War Department communications, photographs and other ephemera relating to South Wheeling native Frederick Elkes and his military service, from 1935-1958. Correspondence includes letters from Elkes to his father while he served in the Army Air Corps in the Philippines prior to World War II. The collection also documents Elkes’ time as a prisoner of war after the Japanese invasion and
the fall of Bataan through notices and correspondence from the War Department, as well as his subsequent death on the “hellship” Arisan Maru. Also included in the collection are photographs of Elkes in the Philippines as well as two with his wife Ruby, whom he married while stationed there.
