Elizabeth Brand Monroe Papers

About this collection:

➤ Elizabeth Brand Monroe, American legal historian, was born in 1947. She received a B.A. from George Mason University in 1968, a M.A. and a M.A.H from the University of Virginia in 1969 and 1975 respectively. Monroe then went on to obtain a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1989. Her dissertation research into the seminal court case involving the Wheeling Suspension Bridge culminated in the publication of her book The Wheeling Bridge Case: Its Significance in American Law and Technology, published in 1992. In 2002, she received a J.D. from Indiana University-Indianapolis. She is an Associate Professor of History at Indiana University – Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The collection consists of the research files of Monroe for her book on the Wheeling Suspension Bridge.  The majority of the collection is comprised of photocopies of archival material and some secondary sources located in other repositories. Also included are Monroe’s research notes and trip logs that provide insight into her research methodology. While many of the archival collections she consulted were housed at various universities and the National Archives in Washington, DC, much of her research was conducted at the Ohio County Public Library and the Oglebay Institute in Wheeling, West Virginia.
