About this collection:
➤ Joseph T. McCombs was born in Ohio County, near Wheeling, on June 4, 1847. In 1862, at the age of 16, McCombs enlisted in the Union Army, and was assigned to Battery D, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. Battery D, led by Captain John Carlin, participated in several battles in the Civil War, including Piedmont, Winchester and New Market. McCombs was discharged on June 27, 1865. He moved to Wolf Run in Marshall County, WV after the war, and married Ella (Eleanor) Baird in 1868. They had two sons and three daughters. McCombs was elected to the WV House of Delegates in 1885 and 1887, served as deputy sheriff, and as the county coroner for 30 years. McCombs died on June 2, 1935. He is buried at Allen Grove Presbyterian Cemetery in Marshall County, WV.
The collection consists of photographs, a lithograph and a muster roll related to McCombs service in Battery D, 1st W. Va. Artillery. The photographs depict several Grand Army of the Republic encampments, including one at Moundsville, WV in 1930. The collection also includes a Soldier’s Memorial lithograph which lists all members of Battery D, 1st W. Va. Light Artillery. The muster roll is extremely fragile and available only by appointment.
