People's University Livestream: Around the World in Literature & Language

The OCPL Summer Reading Program theme for 2020 is "Reading Takes You Places" and our summer People's U is going to do just that! We're going to dive into some great world literature and along the way learn some useful words and phrases from the regions these stories take place. We'll be heading to places like Japan, Russia, Nigeria, Italy, Scandinavia, Australia,  and more! Join us as we 読んだ (Yonda)-читать (chitat')-soma-leggere-lese-read our way across the world. Join us online on Thursday nights at 6:30 pm.

Geography Bee: Dr. David Javersak hosts a World Geography Bee featuring questions inspired, in part, by the Around the World People's University series. Watch live and participate on YouTube or Facebook.  No pre-registration required. Just join us online and participate by logging into your Facebook or YouTube account and having your keyboard ready to answer questions!

Class 8: Instructor Dr. Kim Grewe will take us to Columbia through the lush novel Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez while K. V. White will take us on a short virtual tour of some of the most breathtaking Venezuelan landscapes captured in 20th Century literary masterpieces. We'll also chat about contrapunteos llaneros.

Class 7:Instructor Lou Volpe, English teacher at Wheeling Central for 40 years, will lead our tour of Italy using Alessandro Manzoni’s I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed). The story takes place in Milan during the 17th Century during a plague. Plus, Italian words and phrases!

Thursday | July 16, 2020 at 6:30 pm - Around the World in Literature & Language
Class 6: "Jumbucks, Billabongs and Budgie Smugglers: Ballads and Bards of the Australian Bush," with Instructor Brad Fitzmaurice. Fitzmaurice currently teaches American history at Australia’s oldest tertiary institution, the University of Sydney, and is writing a PhD on the history of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Class 5: Nigerian Literature and Language with Father Alfred Obiudu. Hailing from Nigeria himself, and once assigned to St. Michael's Parish here in Wheeling, Father Obiudu is now a priest at St. Leo’s Parish in Inwood, WV. Father Obiudu will explore the works of Chinua Achebe, best known for the 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart, and teach online People's U attendees a few words and phrases in the Nigerian language, Igbo.
