Beverly Fluty, courtesy WVIH. Beverly Fluty (1931-2009) and her family moved to Wheeling in 1968 and she was astounded at the city’s rich history and culture. She awakened her new community, opening our eyes, and galvanizing local citizens and fellow preservationists to appreciate, preserve and enhance our architectural heritage.  Beverly’s role in saving the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was seriously deteriorating, and the restoration of West Virginia Independence Hall, cannot be overstated. Both have been designated as National Historic Landmarks, underscoring their national significance and the city’s contribution to the heritage of the United States.

But it was also the school children that Beverly so cared about. She led classes Beverly Fluty, courtesy WVIH.through downtown, pointing out architectural details, telling stories of the history and people behind the buildings.  A great love of hers was throwing a birthday party for the Suspension Bridge complete with cake and balloons!  Beverly’s leadership and unstoppable enthusiasm touched many lives and left a community proud of its achievements, history and place in our national story.
