RITES TODAY FOR C. W. BATES


PROMINENT ARCHITECT WHO DIED SATURDAY, TO BE BURIED IN GREENWOOD TEN FRIENDS TO OFFICIATE AS PALLBEARERS AT SERVICES TODAY


Charles W. Bates, 51, one of the most prominent architects of Wheeling, who died suddenly Saturday morning [November 28, 1931] enroute to the Cleveland clinic hospital, will be buried this afternoon.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2.30 o’clock at his home in Hawthorne Court, Woodsdale under the charge of Dr. James M. Potter, pastor of the Vance Memorial Presbyterian church. Interment will be made privately In Greenwood cemetery.

Ten close friends of Mr. Bates will officiate as the pallbearers. They will be: Jasper B. Baum, Roy B. Naylor, Joseph R. Naylor, Arthur C. Stifel, Walter B. Higgins, George H. List, J. Sumner Jones, Harry W. Gee, D. A. Burt and J. E. Stephenson.

Mr. Bates was being taken from his home to tile Cleveland Clinic in an ambulance for treatment when he succumbed shortly before arriving at the hospital. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been ill for the past several weeks, his condition becoming serious Friday evening.

He was born in Wheeling December 27, 1879, a son of the late Dr. William J. Bates and Mrs. Jennie Campbell Bates. After attending Wheeling public schools and Linsly Institute, he studied architecture at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago. He practiced his profession from 1904 until 1909 In Pittsburgh and Chicago, returning to Wheeling and reestablishing his main offices here in 1909. In recent years he had been located in the Hawley building, having been formerly located on Chapline street. Other headquarters were in Cleveland and Youngstown.

Mr. Bates was a member of a number of organizations of the community, among them the Fort Henry club, the University club, the Wheeling, Cedar Rocks and Belmont Hills country clubs and of the Wheeling Rotary club. He attended the Vance Memorial Presbyterian church and was a member of the Men’s Bible class of that church.

Mr. Bates’ unfortunate death occurred just three days prior to his twenty-first wedding anniversary, having been united in marriage December 1, 1910 with Miss Isabelle Jepson, who survives him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, William Jourdan Bates, Samuel Jepson Bates, and Charles Winning Bates, by his sister, Miss Alice Bats, of the Country Club hill, a brother, William C. Bates, of Woodsdale.
